The Statue of Liberty National Monument was completed on October 28, 1886. From the base to the top of the torch, she is 151 feet high. The exterior structure of the Statue is made of copper and the interior support structure is made of steel. Her official name is "Liberty Enlightening the World."
The Ellis Island Immigration Museum is an important and iconic part of America's history. Over 12 million passed through the island while it was in operation. Today, more than 40% of Americans have an ancestor who entered the country through Ellis Island.
Liberty Enlightening the World
Located on a 12 acre island, the Statue of "Liberty Enlightening the
World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people
of the United States and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The
Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886, designated as a National
Monument in 1924 and restored for her centennial on July 4, 1986.
Ellis Island
Ellis Island Immigration Museum is part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
It was added to the National Park System in May of 1965 and following an extensive
restoration, its main building opened over a quarter century later on September
10, 1990 as a National Museum of Immigration.
If I take the ferry from one side, must I return to that side?
No. You may depart from and return to different locations. However, once you
return to either Battery Park or Liberty State Park, you may not reboard the
ferry. Be sure to use the appropriate boarding location at each island.
What languages are spoken in the reservation center?
The reservation center is multi-lingual. We have agents who speak Cantonese,
English, Fijian, French, Hindi, Italian, Lithuanian, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan,
Spanish, Urdu, Tagolog, Thai, and Vietnamese. We will be offering more languages
in the future.
Is the Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island?
No, there are two separate islands, Liberty Island and Ellis Island. The Statue
of Liberty is on Liberty Island and the National Museum of Immigration and former
federal immigration station are on Ellis Island.
Are pets allowed on the ferry or in the park?
No. Pets are prohibited from using the ferry system and being on Liberty and
Ellis Islands. However, documented service/assist animals are exempt from this
policy.
Can I purchase food or bring my own to the park?
There are food and beverage concessions available on all the vessels and on
both islands, although you are welcome to bring your own. Large coolers will
not be allowed through security screening. No food or beverages (including water)
are permitted in the Statue Museum and Pedestal.
If I'm using a car to get to the ferry, is parking available?
Ferries depart from Battery Park in New York City and from Liberty State Park
in Jersey City, New Jersey. There is ample car and bus parking at the ferry
area in Liberty State Park in New Jersey. Although private parking garages may
be available to you near Battery Park, parking is usually very limited and can
be costly.
What should I wear?
Dress for the season when you visit the Statue of Liberty National Monument
and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum. During the summer months temperatures
can rise to the high 90's with high humidity. In the winter temperatures are
chilly. Be sure to dress in layers in case conditions change suddenly. Be sure
to wear comfortable shoes as you will be walking a great deal during your visit.
When available, if you choose to depart at 2:00 pm, you will only be able to
visit either Liberty Island or Ellis Island. Unfortunately, there will not be
enough time to visit both landmarks.
